Blueberry Pineapple Fruit Salsa

Blueberry Pineapple Fruit Salsa is sweet and tasty, but has a nice little kick of heat. I love a strawberry salsa, or any other kind of fruit salsa, but this blueberry and pineapple salsa blows them all away.

Blueberry Fruit Salsa, a great blueberry and pineapple salsa! One reason I love this Blueberry Pineapple Fruit Salsa is it has the fruit element of fruit salsa: pineapple and blueberries. Then it has traditional salsa elements: cilantro, red onion, jalapeño. Then a few fun twists: yellow pepper, and a great little lime dressing to tie it all together! You NEED this in your life.

Tips and Tricks for Making Fresh Blueberry Salsa

  1. Choose Fresh, Ripe Blueberries: Opt for firm, plump blueberries with a deep blue color. Avoid any that are mushy or have signs of mold.
  2. Balance Flavors: Blueberries are sweet, so balance them with ingredients that add acidity, heat, and saltiness. Lime juice, jalapeños, and a pinch of salt work well.
  3. Chop Ingredients Uniformly: For a more visually appealing and evenly textured salsa, chop all ingredients into similar-sized pieces. This ensures a perfect bite every time.
  4. Add Fresh Herbs: Fresh cilantro or mint can enhance the flavor of your salsa. Chop them finely to distribute the flavor evenly.
  5. Incorporate Crunch: Add some crunch with diced red onions, bell peppers, or even jicama. This adds texture and contrast to the soft blueberries.
  6. Use Fresh Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a zesty kick and helps to preserve the salsa. Avoid bottled lime juice as it can be too tart and lack freshness.
  7. Season Properly: Taste your salsa as you go and adjust the seasoning. A little salt can go a long way in enhancing the flavors.
  8. Let It Marinate: Allow the salsa to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving. This lets the flavors meld together and enhances the overall taste.
  9. Customize Heat Levels: Adjust the heat by controlling the amount and type of peppers used. Jalapeños, serranos, or even habaneros can be used depending on your heat preference.
  10. Experiment with Add-ins: Try adding corn, avocado, or even diced mango for a unique twist. These ingredients can complement the blueberries well.

Florida Blueberries! Blueberry pineapple fruit salsa

Oh my gosh, you guys are going to go crazy for this fruit salsa. And the star of the show…blueberries! Aren’t these blueberries gorgeous?

This summer I will be spending about a week in Anna Maria Island, Florida, and one of the things I am most excited about is the warm weather cooking, and  a plate full of colorful, locally grown foods. Especially things like sweet corn, watermelon, seafood, and these gorgeous, plump blueberries! Can you just imagine this blueberry salsa over a piece of freshly caught and grilled fish? Me too! Mouth. Watering.

This salsa is perfection. It is good with chips, on top of chicken or fish, or you could just eat it with a spoon. The key is great produce. I started with fresh blueberries because I knew they would be good.

I played with this recipe a lot to get the heat right. It is tricky because you never know how hot or mild the jalapeño you get will be. But I found this combination of fruit and pepper is really great most of the time. If you have a really hot jalapeño you may want to add extra blueberries and pineapple to help tame the heat. I like my fruit salsa to have a little kick, otherwise it might as well be jam. I also added some Sriracha to the lime dressing because if the jalapeño is too mild it is a nice way to add just a touch of that sweet heat to every bite!

Storage Tips for Blueberry Salsa

  1. Use an Airtight Container: Store your blueberry salsa in an airtight container to keep it fresh. This prevents the salsa from absorbing any odors from the fridge.
  2. Refrigerate Promptly: Blueberry salsa is best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated for up to 2-3 days. The longer it sits, the more the blueberries may release their juices and alter the texture.
  3. Stir Before Serving: After storing, the salsa may become watery as the blueberries release their juices. Stir it well before serving to redistribute the flavors and juices.
  4. Drain Excess Liquid: If the salsa becomes too watery after storing, drain some of the excess liquid before serving to maintain the right consistency.
  5. Avoid Freezing: Freezing is not recommended for blueberry salsa as the texture of the fresh ingredients, particularly the blueberries, will be compromised upon thawing.
  6. Keep Cold When Serving: If you’re serving the salsa at a party or gathering, keep it chilled by placing the serving bowl over ice. This helps maintain its freshness and safety.

So go ahead, take a scoop full, or a spoon full, or on a protein. But no matter what you do, please, for the love of all things delicious, try this recipe!

How to Adjust the Heat Levels in Salsa

Select the Right Peppers:

  • Mild Heat: Use bell peppers or poblano peppers. These add flavor without much heat.
  • Medium Heat: Jalapeños and serrano peppers are great choices. Remove seeds and membranes for less heat.
  • High Heat: Habaneros, ghost peppers, or other hot varieties. Use sparingly and consider wearing gloves when handling.

Control the Quantity:

  • Mild: Use a small amount of mild peppers or a tiny bit of hotter peppers.
  • Medium: Increase the amount of medium-heat peppers or use a moderate amount of hot peppers.
  • Hot: Add more hot peppers or leave seeds and membranes intact for extra heat.

Remove Seeds and Membranes:

  • The seeds and membranes (white pith) contain most of the capsaicin, the compound that makes peppers hot. Removing them reduces the heat.

Add Gradually:

  • Add peppers to the salsa a little at a time, tasting as you go. This way, you can stop when the heat level is to your liking.
