Theme park style funnel cakes made at home, and a look at how we are saving money this summer with Walmart Family Mobile and season passes to our local theme park!
Guess what guys!? I have a fun announcement, I was selected to be an ambassador for Walmart Family Mobile! Now, you already know how much I love Walmart Family Mobile for their great service, and low prices, as I have talked about them in several other posts, like my Million Dollar Bars, my Chicken Pesto Pasta, and my Peppermint Glazed Sugar Cookies. But now I am taking my love to a whole new level!
When you love something, it is hard not to share it, but don’t worry, I won’t spend this whole post telling you how great the new ZTE ZMax phone is, or how the service is only $29.88/month for the first line, and that WFM offers Unlimited Talk, Text, and Data with 1G up to 4G and LTE service. Instead, I am going to talk to you about Funnel Cake and theme parks!
Yes you read that right! Funnel Cake! I love it. The fried sugary goodness of funnel cake, with powdered sugar sprinkled on top, and all the memories it brings to mind of summer nights spent at theme parks, with midway music, bright lights, and hand holding on the ferris wheel with the hubs!
I love eating funnel cakes at the theme park, but they are pricey, and so easy and cheap to make at home! Especially if you use my trick of using a “just-add-water” pancake mix as your base!
Our family is kind of big. There are six of us. This means summers can be expensive. I like to save money where I can, even if it means making my own funnel cake at home. We save money by purchasing season passes to local attractions. We get a family pass to the pool, a summer pass to the trampoline park, and our favorite—season passes to our local theme park! We buy them earlier in the year to spread out the expenses. I even buy the passes on Black Friday when they are 20% off! The savings really add up. And so does the fun!
Our summer passes mean we can have fun all summer long without spending copious amounts of money each day.
This year my kids are getting older, and more independent. And they want to venture out more at the theme park. I love that with WFM I can have an affordable option for keeping tabs on my kids. I can let my bigger kids ride some of the rides their younger siblings can’t ride, without me, but still maintain peace of mind because I can easily get ahold of them.
I love that they have a phone, and even though they think I am crazy because I want them to call me after every single ride, I feel great!
Anyway, let’s get back to the Funnel Cake! One of the best things about theme parks is the food. Churros, cotton candy, popcorn, coaster dogs, and everything deep fried and delicious! Just the smell of fryer grease makes me want to hang upside down, and fly in circles, and try not to throw up!
Right? Like, total tangent here, but who decided the best foods to offer crowds who will be spinning in circles, and shooting up and down on hydraulic coasters would be heavy, deep fried, sugary foods? Perfect for motion sickness. Lol. But trust me, I am not complaining at all because hand me a funnel cake, a cinnamon and sugar churro, and an ICEE and I am one happy girl!
Now that I have learned how to make funnel cakes at home, using pancake mix, it is hard for me to pay the $10 price tag to get one at the park! I sound like the cheapest person on the planet. But the fact is, I like to save money where I can so a low cost mobile plan, homemade funnel cake, and a season pass for the theme park are the way to go!

Easy to Make Funnel Cake
Ingredients
- Oil for frying
- 1 1/2 cups Just add Water style pancake mix
- 3/4-1 cup water depending on the pancake mix you use, you may need more water
- 2 Tbs granulated sugar
- 2 Tbs vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar confectioner's sugar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat oil to 375 degrees. Use a candy or oil thermometer or a fryer to insure the temperature is accurate and stays even while cooking.
- Mix the pancake mix, sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla together, and adjust consistency with water until it is runny enough to drip through a funnel, but not too runny. You want it to run off a spoon in an even flow.
- Either using a funnel or for more consistency a squeeze bottle, squeeze batter into heated oil, swirling around to get the cake shape
- Cook for about 1 minute on the first side, and flip and cook 30-45 seconds on the other, or if using a fryer so cake is fully submersed, cook until golden brown (roughly 1 1/2-2 minutes)
- Remove from fryer, put on paper towel to soak up excess oil, and sprinkle with powdered sugar
- Enjoy immediately.

You do have a big family! There are only 4 of us and things are already expensive, so I feel your pain! Making funnel cakes at home sounds like a blast — my kids would love this!
