Cheap or Free Things to Do in Kona, Hawaii
Visiting the Big Island’s stunning Kona coast doesn’t have to break the bank! Whether you’re exploring historic sites, hiking fun trails, soaking up the sun, or taking in breathtaking ocean views, there are plenty of cheap or free activities to make the most of your trip. Here are some of the best budget-friendly things to do in Kona that let you experience the beauty and culture of Hawaii without spending a fortune.
As someone who loves Hawaii, and has visited all of the Islands, Maui, Kauai, Oahu, and the Big Island, I know how expensive it can be to visit. But that doesn’t mean you can’t vacation in Kona on a budget.
1. Relax at Magic Sands Beach (White Sands Beach)
A favorite among locals and visitors alike, Magic Sands Beach is known for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or just enjoying the view, this beach is completely free to visit!
👉 Tip: The sand can disappear during rough surf, hence the name “Magic Sands!” Be sure to check conditions before heading out.
Of course there are plenty of other awesome beaches worth a visit, one of our favorites is Hapuna Beach (North of Kona) for big waves, and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach where you are sure to see turtles (but over on the Hilo side of the big island)!
2. Snorkel at Kahalu’u Beach Park
This protected bay is one of the best (and easiest) places to snorkel in Kona, with colorful fish, sea turtles, and calm waters. Bring your own gear to keep it free, or rent snorkel sets nearby for an affordable price.
👉 Tip: Visit in the morning for the best visibility and fewer crowds!
3. Stroll Through Historic Kailua Village
Take a walk through downtown Kona and soak in the local history, art, and stunning oceanfront views. Stop by landmarks like:
- Hulihe‘e Palace (a former royal vacation home)
- Mokuaikaua Church (Hawaii’s oldest Christian church)
- The waterfront walkway along Ali‘i Drive
👉 Bonus: Window shopping and people-watching here is completely free!
4. Visit Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park
Explore ancient Hawaiian fishponds, petroglyphs, and sacred sites at this free national park. It’s also a great spot to see green sea turtles basking on the shore!
👉 Tip: Wear sturdy shoes for walking the lava rock trails.
There are tons of cool historic sites on the Big Island, from Petroglyphs and more, so take the time to visit some of these free sites to learn about Hawaii’s history and culture.
5. Tour a Coffee Farm
Kona is world-famous for its coffee, and many local farms offer free tours and tastings! Learn about the coffee-making process while enjoying some of the best brews in Hawaii. Many of these farms also have mac nut tastings, and more. Some great farms to visit include:
- Paradise Meadows – Honey, Coffee, Mac Nuts, and more.
- Greenwell Farms
- Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation
- Hula Daddy Kona Coffee
👉 Tip: While the tours are free, buying a small bag of coffee supports local farmers!
6. Watch the Sunset at Old Kona Airport Beach
The Old Kona Airport Beach Park is a hidden gem for sunset lovers. It’s uncrowded, peaceful, and offers stunning ocean views—the perfect way to end a day in paradise.
👉 Tip: Pack a picnic and enjoy dinner with a view!
7. See the Seahorses at Ocean Rider ($)
While not free, this one-of-a-kind seahorse farm is an affordable and unique experience! For a small fee, you can see, learn about, and even hold a live seahorse. Great for families and ocean lovers!
👉 Tip: Book in advance—tours often sell out!
8. Explore Lava Tubes
Just a short drive from Kona, the Kaumana Caves offer a cool underground adventure through ancient lava tubes. It’s completely free, but bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes!
For a paid option that is really neat, and not too expensive, and comes with a guide, check out the Kula Kai Caverns. Or visit the Thurston Lava Tubes in Volcanoes National Park.
👉 Tip: Go early in the day to beat the heat and crowds.
9. Visit the Painted Church
The St. Benedict’s Painted Church is a small, historic chapel with beautiful hand-painted murals depicting biblical stories. It’s a peaceful spot to visit, and donations are optional.
👉 Tip: Pair this stop with a coffee farm visit for a fun Kona day trip!
10. Check Out Local Farmers’ Markets
Support local farmers and artisans at Kona’s open-air markets, where you can sample tropical fruits, fresh-baked treats, and handmade souvenirs. Popular markets include:
- Kona Farmers Market (Ali‘i Drive)
- Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market (near Keauhou)
👉 Tip: Many vendors offer free samples—try before you buy!
