Exploring Akaka Falls: A Tropical Oasis on Hawaii’s Big Island

Hawaii boasts a lot of natural beauty, and the Big Island, while volcanic and rocky in many parts, also has some really lush, gorgeous areas with water falls. A visit to the Big Island should definitely include a trip to Akaka Falls.

One of the must-see falls on the Big Island, Akaka Falls, is nestled along the lush Hamakua Coast just north of Hilo. This state park is one of the Big Island’s best treasures, with enchanting natural beauty, lush rainforest, and the fall itself is a towering 442‑feet. With a paved and peaceful 0.4‑mile loop trail winding through a vibrant rainforest, and leading to the falls, it is simple the perfect excursion for nature lovers, families, and adventure seekers to enjoy what the Hawaiian islands have to offer.

If visiting Kona or the Big Island, be sure to check out the best hikes, best beaches, and do a Manta Ray Night Snorkel.

What to Expect

Visiting the Falls is a must, so here is what you should know:

How long is it? You will have a well‑maintained, paved loop trail that meanders through tropical foliage—including wild orchids, bamboo groves, and ferns. The trail is designed for visitors of all ages, making it an ideal family-friendly hike, it is only 0.4 miles total for the loop, so it is easy for all ages. Although, please note that there are some steps and inclines that can become slippery in the rain.

What is it like? Beautiful tropical foliage, multiple viewpoints showcasing two main waterfalls: the impressive 442‑foot Akaka Falls and the nearby Kahuna Falls. While it is a short hike, plan for plenty of time to gawk, meander, and stop to snap photos, and savor the natural beauty you will find here.

Entry Fees and Practical Information

Akaka Falls State Park is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, providing ample time to explore this tropical gem. For non‑residents, the entrance fee is $5 per person.  There is also  a $10 parking fee per vehicle. Hawaii residents can enjoy free entry and parking by presenting a valid state ID or driver’s license. Payments are accepted by credit card only, and there is a QR code you can scan to pay for your visit. You can pre-pay before going, just be sure to show the park attendant that you have paid for your entrance.

Tips for a Smooth Visit

  • Arrive Early: Beat the crowds and enjoy the soft, morning light—perfect for photography.
  • Wear Sturdy Footwear: Although the trail is paved, the steps can be slippery, especially after rain.
  • Pack Essentials: Bring a light rain jacket, water, and your camera to capture the breathtaking views. Bug spray is a good idea too since it is a rainforest.
  • Respect the Environment: Stick to designated paths and pack out all your trash to help preserve this natural paradise.
  • Prepare for Limited Connectivity: Since cell reception may be spotty, consider pre-paying your fees online before you arrive.
