Best Beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii is a paradise of diverse landscapes, and its beaches are no exception. From black sand shores to crystal-clear snorkeling spots, this island has a beach for every type of traveler. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or breathtaking scenery, here are the best beaches to visit on the Big Island.

The best beaches to visit on the big island of hawaii

1. Hapuna Beach

Hapuna Beach is one of the most famous beaches on the Big Island, known for its soft white sand and clear blue waters. It’s perfect for swimming, boogie boarding, and sunbathing. During the winter months, you might even spot whales off the coast!

Why visit?

  • Half a mile of gorgeous sandy shoreline
  • Ideal for swimming and snorkeling when conditions are calm
  • Plenty of amenities including restrooms, picnic areas, showers, and lifeguards
  • Fun waves, and close to plenty of things to do.

  • Great for snorkeling and paddleboarding
  • Limited public parking, so arrive early

4. Green Sand Beach (Papakōlea Beach)

One of only four green sand beaches in the world, Papakōlea gets its color from olivine crystals in the sand. It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but the surreal scenery makes it well worth the effort.

Why visit?

  • Rare green sand and dramatic coastal views
  • Adventurous 2.5-mile hike to the beach
  • Less crowded due to its remote location
