Steamed Peas in Vinaigrette

Steamed peas vinaigrette. A light fresh side dish made with snow peas, radish, and a quick make vinaigrette. All you need is 5 minutes.

If you’re looking for a light, refreshing, and healthy side dish, steamed peas in vinaigrette is the perfect option. This delightful combination of snow peas, sugar snap peas, and radishes tossed in a tangy vinaigrette is simple to make yet packed with flavor. Whether you’re serving it alongside a main course like this Baked Breaded Chicken or enjoying it as a standalone snack, it is a real winner.

While I love a good main dish, like this Garlic and Sage Rubbed Pork Tenderloin or Juicy Baked Chicken, sides are often what steal the show for dinners around here. We love bright, vibrant, fresh, and home grown when we can. And even when we can’t we love things like Freezer Corn that elevates a meal. And these peas are soooo good.

If you want a great twist on a conventional side, this is the ticket. It is fresh, yummy, and very easy to make. It takes about 5 minutes. Total! Start to finish. The recipe calls for both snow peas and sugar snap. If you do not have snow, or sugar snap peas, skip them and just use one kid. Use what you have. Seriously.

Anyway, I make this all the time, and one of my lovely readers asked for an easy side dish to mix things up. This was the first thing that popped in my mind! I hope you enjoy it!

If you don’t have mirin and want to make this, you may have trouble finding it at the grocery store. It is usually in the Asian foods section and can be called rice wine. Or you can order it online: Kikkoman – Aji-Mirin

One bottle will last a long time.

What You Need

For the Peas:

  • 1 cup snow peas
  • 1 cup sugar snap peas, trimmed
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced radishes

For the Vinaigrette:

  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons mirin
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

How to Make Steamed Peas in Vinaigrette

  1. Steam the Peas:
    • Place the snow peas and sugar snap peas in a steamer basket over boiling water.
    • Cover and steam for about 3 minutes, or until the peas are crisp-tender.
    • Remove the peas from the steamer and set aside.steamed peas
  2. Prepare the Vinaigrette:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the rice vinegar, soy sauce, olive oil, mirin, black pepper, and salt until well combined.
  3. Assemble the Dish:
    • In a large bowl, combine the steamed peas and thinly sliced radishes.
    • Pour the vinaigrette over the pea mixture.
    • Toss gently to ensure the peas and radishes are evenly coated with the vinaigrette.
  4. Serve:
    • Transfer the peas to a serving platter or individual bowls.
    • Serve immediately to enjoy the fresh, vibrant flavors.

Remember, your food is only as good as your ingredients, so try and use fresh ingredients, and clean them well!  Pull out your peas and radishes, start a steamer.

Steam your peas for 3 minutes. While they are steaming, mix up the sauce you toss them in, and slice your radishes thin.

Then enjoy!

Tips and Variations

  • Add Some Heat: For a spicy kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the vinaigrette.
  • Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds or slivered almonds over the peas for added texture and flavor.
  • Citrus Twist: Substitute the rice vinegar with lemon or lime juice for a citrusy variation of the vinaigrette.
  • Fresh Herbs: Garnish with fresh herbs like mint, cilantro, or basil to enhance the dish with a burst of herbal freshness.

Serving Suggestions

  • Main Course Companion: Pair this dish with grilled chicken, fish, or tofu for a well-rounded meal.
  • Picnic Perfection: This light and portable dish is great for picnics or potlucks. It can be served hot or cold!
  • Quick Snack: Enjoy a bowl of these flavorful peas as a healthy and satisfying snack.
