What Lettuce Do You Use For Wraps?
There are a few different lettuces that are great for lettuce wraps. When looking for what lettuce to use, you want a lettuce that is easy to work with, can hold the filling for the wrap, and has a good flavor.
For this recipe I really like to use butter lettuce.
Why I Like Butter Lettuce For Wraps?
- Easy to work with for rolling up wraps
- Subtle sweetness in flavor
- Tender structure
Butter lettuce is often used in lettuce cups or wraps. It rolls up nicely, making it easy to work with and it has a nice flavor to it.
I know, I know, lettuce has flavor? It can have a slight flavor, actually.
Some greens are known to be bitter, which is not the flavor you want in lettuce wraps.
Also when choosing lettuce or greens for a wrap, some greens are harder to roll, which is not what you want either.
Now I realize that although butter lettuce isn’t hard to find, you may not always have it on hand. There are other lettuce options that are also good for lettuce wraps and would make fine options for this recipe.
You could use iceberg or romaine as a substitute.
Good Lettuce Choices For Lettuce Wraps:
- Romaine
- Iceberg
- Butter Lettuce (of course)
No matter which of these three lettuces you choose, your breakfast lettuce wraps will be delicious and will add a whole new meal option to your breakfast rotation.

Can You Cook Lettuce?
Can you cook lettuce? Your first reaction to this question is probably why would you want to. Actually though, cooking lettuce can add a lot to a dish.
You don’t want to cook lettuce though when making lettuce wraps. You want the lettuce to stay cool, refreshing, and still have a little crisp.
If you do ever want to cook lettuce, cooked lettuce goes great in other dishes though.
Add a new depth of flavor to a salad and cook lettuce or replace cabbage in a meat and potatoes dish with cooked lettuce. Since lettuce typically does not have that strong of a taste, it can soak in other flavors when cooked.
For example in my corned beef and cabbage recipe, if I did not have cabbage on hand I could easily replace this component of the dish with a sturdy breed of lettuce.
Note: When choosing a lettuce to cook with, you need a lettuce that is sturdy enough to handle the heat. Romaine or endive are two examples of lettuce that make a good choice for cooking.
