What You Need to Make Sloppy Joe Pizza Rolls
For the Sloppy Joe Mixture
- Homemade Sloppy Joe Mixture
- Or Use Manwich:
- 1 pound ground beef or turkey
- 1 can of Manwich
For the Pizza Rolls
- 1 prepared pizza crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, avocado, sliced green onions, pickles, jalapeños
- Olive oil for brushing
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Sloppy Joe Mixture
- Homemade: Follow the instant pot instructions, or make it in a large skillet.
- Manwich: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until browned. Drain excess fat. Stir in the can of Manwich and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
Step 2: Assemble the Pizza Rolls
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Prepare the Crust: Roll out the prepared pizza crust into a rectangle on a floured surface.
- Top with Mixture: Spread the Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over the pizza crust.
- Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top of the Sloppy Joe mixture.
- Roll and Slice: Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the crust into a tight log. Slice into 1-inch pieces and place them cut-side up on a greased baking sheet.
- Bake: Brush the tops of the rolls with a little olive oil. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Step 3: Finish and Serve
- Top with Fresh Ingredients: Once baked, top the rolls with optional fresh toppings like fresh lettuce, sliced green onions, pickles, or jalapeños for an added kick.
- Serve: Serve hot and enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Rolling Tips: For easier rolling, use a slightly chilled dough and don’t overfill with the Sloppy Joe mixture.
- Cheese: Use a combination of cheeses for a richer flavor. A mix of cheddar and mozzarella works great.
- Slice Evenly: Use a sharp knife or dental floss to slice the rolls evenly without squishing them.
- Prevent Sticking: Line your baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the rolls from sticking.
Storage
- Refrigerator: Store any leftover rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer: Freeze the uncooked rolls on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
Variations and Substitutions
- Different Meats: Use ground chicken, turkey, or even plant-based meat substitutes.
- Add Veggies: Sneak in extra nutrition by adding finely chopped vegetables like carrots, zucchini, green bell peppers, garlic, or mushrooms to the Sloppy Joe mixture.
- Spicy Kick: Add some heat with chopped jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.
- Different Cheeses: Try different cheeses like pepper jack, provolone, or gouda for a unique flavor twist.
- Alternative Doughs: Use crescent roll dough or puff pastry for a different texture.
