What is Greek Chicken?
Greek Chicken: A marinated chicken breast that soaks in the flavors of the Mediterranean, such as lemon, garlic, rosemary and thyme. It is flavorful, delicious, and way easier than it seems.
Skillet Greek chicken is a great way to cook chicken. The Greek chicken marinade is light and flavorful and really showcases the hero of the dish, the chicken.
As with any recipe, there will be variations. Basically though, Greek chicken is marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, garlic, and then with the typical additions thyme and rosemary.
Usually you will marinate the chicken overnight, giving the blend of flavors a chance to really soak into the chicken.
How Long Do You Cook a Chicken Breast in the Oven?
Whether you cook chicken in a skillet or oven, it’s good to know how long the chicken typically takes to cook. With skillet chicken it may take as little as 8 minutes (depending on the thickness of the chicken breast). However cooking in the oven will take longer.
Cooking times will vary depending on the temperature and size of the chicken breast.
Typically, an 8 oz boneless thawed chicken breast takes about 30 minutes to cook in the oven at 375 degrees. Obviously, with a higher temperature the chicken breast will cook more quickly, but 375 is a good temperature to work with.
When cooking though, I always check on the chicken before the recommended time is up. Sometimes a piece of chicken may cook faster than expected and you want to make sure that you do not over cook and dry out your chicken.
If you need a great skillet in order to master the kitchen, try this one from Amazon. Its got great reviews and is very affordable.
How do You Make Sure Chicken is Cooked Through?
Check for clear juices coming out of the chicken. If the juices are clear, then it is probably done. You don’t want to cut chicken in half while it is cooking as a method for checking because this method compromises the flavor and can dry it out. You can also try using a cooking thermometer, available through Amazon.
Chicken that is properly cooked will be 165 degrees. So when in doubt, check the temp!
Can you Marinate Chicken in Greek Yogurt?
For this recipe I use a classic Greek Chicken Marinade. However, sometimes when I want to mix things up I will mix this marinade with greek yogurt to add additional juiciness and flavor.
There is so much to do with chicken. For example, making a skillet Greek chicken is a great way to change things up a bit. Another way to change things up is to marinate chicken in Greek yogurt.
If you haven’t ever marinated your chicken in Greek yogurt, then you are missing out. I know, I know, it sounds kind of crazy, marinating chicken with yogurt. Believe me though a Greek chicken yogurt marinade is used all the time and it is so, so, so good.
When I was a child yogurt meant a creamy, sweet fruit infused snack. The idea of putting yogurt with chicken would have sounded preposterous.
However, using yogurt is actually a brilliant marinade! Well, first of all the type of yogurt you will want to use will be plain yogurt. No vanilla or fruit filled yogurt. Plain yogurt has a more universal flavor, rather than sweet.
What does Yogurt do for Chicken?
Using Greek yogurt as a marinade helps make the chicken become nice and juicy. The elements in Greek yogurt tenderizes the poultry. Who doesn’t like tender chicken?
*Tip: You will want to make the yogurt a little thinner. Greek yogurt is kind of thick for a marinade. Use lemon juice, water, or olive oil, or mix yogurt with this Greek Chicken Marinade for awesome flavor.
Why Use Yogurt as a Marinade?
- Produces a More Tender Chicken
- Juicy Chicken
- Marinates Chicken Quickly
Add preferred spices to your yogurt marinade and then marinade chicken for about 15 minutes or up to 8 hours or so.
What are Chicken Kebabs Marinated in?
While we are on the subject of marinades and the while weather is still nice, let’s talk about marinades for chicken kebabs. This recipe for a whole chicken breast that is cooked in a skillet is easy to convert to a recipe for the grill. Just change the cooking method, and maybe skewer the meat onto kebabs for a fun twist.
What is in Greek Seasoning Mix?
Now that we have covered marinades and since we are making a Greek chicken, let’s explore Greek seasonings.
A Greek seasoning mix has a fun blend of spices. Just like with any recipe, each mix may add or change a few ingredients. Most Greek seasoning mixes have onion powder, oregano (of course), garlic, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I have a recipe for a Greek Seasoning Blend that I love! Check it out or alter it to your preference.
A lot of Greek seasoning mixes will also have ingredients like basil, parsley, rosemary, dill, thyme, and marjoram.
Possible Spices in a Greek Seasoning Mix:
- Onion Powder
- Oregano
- Garlic
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Basil
- Parsley
- Rosemary
- Dill
- Thyme
- Marjoram
How do you Make a Greek Salad dressing?
Now that we have talked about how long it takes to cook a chicken, spices in Greek seasoning, marinades, etc., before talking about my skillet Greek chicken recipe, let’s cover Greek salad dressings. The marinade I use for this recipe doubles beautifully as a dressing. Sometimes I will add a little extra olive oil, or lemon juice to get it just right for dressing my greens. But trust me, it works wonders.
