What You Need
- Babybel cheese
- Green olives stuffed with pimento
- Cream cheese
- Red food writer (food coloring pen)
How to Make Them Unique and Fun
- Prepare the Babybel Cheese: Unwrap the Babybel cheese, leaving the red wax on the bottom half to create the look of the eye. This will also help hold the eyeball together.
- Create the Pupil: Cut a small piece off the bottom of a green olive stuffed with pimento, just enough to create a flat surface. Place a small dollop of cream cheese on the flat side of the olive and stick it to the center of the Babybel cheese, creating the pupil.
- Add the Bloodshot Effect: Use the red food writer to draw thin, wavy lines radiating from the olive outwards to the edge of the cheese. These lines should mimic the look of blood vessels in a real eye, adding to the spooky effect.
What to Serve This Spooky Treat With
Pair your bloodshot eyeballs with a variety of other Halloween-themed snacks for a complete spooky snack tray. Consider serving:
- Monster Finger Veggie Sticks: Carrot sticks with almond slivers attached with cream cheese to look like fingernails.
- Witch’s Broomsticks: Pretzel sticks with string cheese strips attached as the broom bristles.
- Pumpkin Hummus with Ghost Chips: Homemade or store-bought hummus with tortilla chips cut into ghost shapes.
- Spider Deviled Eggs: Classic deviled eggs topped with black olives arranged to look like spiders.
Or here are several more fun Halloween food ideas:
- Halloween: Skeleton Cupcakes
- Halloween Cupcakes: Ghost Cupcakes
- Swamp Potion Halloween Punch
- Halloween Crispy Cereal Treats
- Halloween Truffles
How to Store Them
These spooky eyeballs can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for up to two days, making them a convenient option for party planning. Just be sure to place them in a single layer to avoid smudging the red food writer lines.
Substitution Ideas
- Cheese Alternatives: If you can’t find Babybel cheese, you can use thick slices of mozzarella or provolone cheese rounds. Use a small round cutter to shape them if necessary.
- Olive Alternatives: If green olives aren’t your favorite, try using black olives with a small piece of red bell pepper for the pimento effect.
- Cream Cheese Alternatives: For a different flavor, use a soft cheese like goat cheese or a spreadable herb cheese.
- Food Coloring Alternatives: If you don’t have a red food writer, you can use a toothpick dipped in red food coloring to draw the bloodshot lines.
These scary bloodshot eyeballs are sure to be a hit at any Halloween party. They are easy to make, visually striking, and delicious to eat. Plus, with the fun substitutions and serving ideas, you can customize them to suit your guests’ tastes and dietary preferences. Happy Halloween!
