This is one of the cutest of our Halloween activities, and relatively easy, which is always nice. We packaged a few of them up and gave them to the Grandparents as a little Halloween treat.
What You Need
- Double Stuff Oreos
- White candy melts
- M&M’s or chocolate chips (for the eyes)
- Popsicle sticks
How to Make Mummy Oreos
- Insert Popsicle Sticks: Carefully insert a popsicle stick into the cream filling of each Double Stuff Oreo. This will serve as the handle for your mummy pops.
- Melt the White Chocolate: Melt your white candy melts according to the package instructions. You can use a microwave or a double boiler to achieve a smooth, melted consistency.
- Dip the Oreos: Dip each Oreo into the melted white chocolate, making sure to coat it evenly. Gently tap the stick against the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate.
- Add Mummy Eyes: While the chocolate is still wet, place two M&M’s or chocolate chips onto each Oreo to create the mummy’s eyes.
- Create the Bandages: Once the chocolate coating has set, melt a little more white chocolate and use a fork to drizzle it over the Oreos in a crisscross pattern. This will create the appearance of mummy bandages.
- Set and Serve: Allow the Mummy Oreos to set completely. You can speed up the process by placing them in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Once set, they are ready to be served!
Serve with Halloween: Mummy Dogs, Mummy Apple Hand Pies, and Halloween: Jack O Lantern and Mummy Pizzas for a fun themed party!
Once the Oreo is dry, pipe on melted white chocolate to make it look like a mummy, or drizzle it using a fork (messier but faster method).
The book I recommend for this food activity is: Skeleton Meets the Mummy
This is a cute book about a skeleton named Sammy who has to walk through the woods on Halloween night to take some soup to his Grandma. He is being followed by something, and is scared. Totally cute. My kids all loved it, from every age group, so that was good.
I also really like this mummy book: Skippyjon Jones in Mummy Trouble. Who doesn’t like the Skippy jon Jones books? That crazy cat reminds me a little too much of my kids, so mischievous.
Tips for Success
- Sturdy Popsicle Sticks: Make sure your popsicle sticks are sturdy enough to hold the weight of the Oreo and the chocolate coating.
- Even Coating: To ensure an even coating of white chocolate, you can use a spoon to help cover the Oreo completely.
- Neat Bandages: For a neat bandage look, hold the fork high above the Oreo and let the chocolate drizzle naturally. This creates a more random and authentic mummy appearance.
Serving Ideas
- Party Platter: Arrange your Mummy Oreos on a Halloween-themed platter along with other spooky treats like ghost cupcakes, spider cookies, and bat brownies.
- Gift Bags: Wrap individual Mummy Oreos in clear cellophane bags and tie with Halloween-themed ribbon. These make great party favors or classroom treats.
- Snack Table: Place them on your Halloween snack table alongside bowls of candy corn, popcorn balls, and caramel apples.
Substitution Ideas
- Different Flavors: Use flavored candy melts such as vanilla or even pumpkin spice to add a unique twist to your Mummy Oreos.
- Alternative Eyes: Try using mini marshmallows or edible googly eyes instead of M&M’s or chocolate chips for a different look.
- Dark Chocolate: For a spookier look, use dark chocolate melts for the coating and white chocolate for the bandages.
These Mummy Oreos are not only easy to make but also a fun and festive addition to any Halloween celebration. Enjoy making and eating these spooky treats with your family and friends! Happy Halloween!
