Salisbury Steak
Salisbury Steak or Hamburger Steak, as it is often called, is a delightful comfort food, that may be reminiscent of TV-dinners, but with this recipe, it is an elevated, fantastically flavorful meal, drowning in a mushroom gravy that will make you want to lick the plate. The whole family will love this dinner, that is economical, and easy to make.
Serve with Herb Butter Mashed Potatoes and Garlic Green Beans for a great meal.
This salisbury steak recipe is phenomenal. I have no other words for it. You get mega flavor with hardly any effort. It pairs well with tons of things from rice to potatoes, and is always wonderful with vegetables. It is quick enough to make for a weeknight meal, but delicious enough you could serve it to company without blinking an eye.
So where did Salisbury Steak come from? I mean, it is ground beef, not steak, so why the name? This is not a recipe that was developed by a chef, rather by a germ theory pioneer–James Salisbury. Hahah, great story right? Basically, Dr. James Henry Salisbury was trying to create a dinner to combat illness amount the Civil War soldiers. He wanted it to be a “meat cure” for the wounded and ill Civil War troops. It was supposed to be a cure for digesetive illness.
I do not know about that, but what I do know is it is fantastic. And totally underrated as it is often associated with cafeteria lunch lines and frozen food sections of the grocery store.
But this is no cafeteria meal. It is far better, far tastier, but almost as easy.

How to Make Salisbury Steaks
Intro of how to make recipe and description of broad overview
Step One: Make and Sear Steak Patties
In a large bowl, combine the ingredients for the steaks and mix together. Once mixed, divide the mixture into 4 equal parts, and shape into oval size patties, about 3/4″ thick. The trick is to make sure they are equal in size so they cook at the same rate, and don’t over cook.
In a large skillet, over medium-high, heat 1 tablespoon of oil. When oil is hot, add the meat patties, and sear for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until a nice golden brown crust forms. Patties will not be cooked through, but remove from skillet and set aside.
Step Two: Make The Gravy
In the same skillet the patties were browned in, add onions and cook about 5 minutes, until softened and translucent. Then stir in mushrooms and cook until browned, another 3-5 minutes. Once browned, add garlic, and cook about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add 2 tablespoons of butter into the pan with the onions, mushrooms, and garlic, and stir in the flour.
Cook until the mixture is thick, about 1 to 2 minutes.
Reduce heat to medium low and gradually stir in the beef broth, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth. Once smooth, add in the Worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, salt and pepper and bring to a simmer.
Step Three: Add Salisbury Steak Patties to the Gravy
Return steak patties to the simmering pan and cover with the gravy. Cover pan with a lid, and cook about 10 minutes, until the steaks are cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.
Step Four: Serve with Sides
Serve immediately over mashed potatoes with the mushroom gravy spooned over top. Enjoy!
